AFAA Mission Day 2
The second day of the mission was rest day. It was Sunday in Liberia and a time when all of Liberia shuts down for church and rest. Most of the stores are closed for the day. As a team we chose to relax at the orphanage and spend some time with the children and workers with our own simple worship service. Everyone was slower to get up on Sunday and by 10 AM we were on the front porch together. We sang a few "church camp" type songs and my dad shared a simple devotion. The highlight of our time together was definately listening to the kids sing a song of praise together and teach it to us. After lunch we headed out as a team to see some local sights, tour the main city, and head to the beach. We called for our friend Musa and his team of drivers to lead us around the town. After a brief tour of the city and a drive around the largest, nicest facility, the US Embassy, and a drive by of the Presidential mansion, college, and other capital buildings we headed for the beach. It seemed a little crazy for the beach we were taken too and I was definately uneasy about the party atmosphere we were going into, but it all worked out. The beach was incredible. I, of course, from previous experience was very afraid of the water while other team members were ready to be cooled off and play in the ocean. Musa surprised our team by negotiating for some Malt drinks and we were quickly surrounded by local jewelers and woodcarvers. Grant and I took a few moments to call back home to TCCC and to speak to our kids and the Uptown kids prior to Sunday School. Then, it was time to head back to the AFAA house for the remainder of the day to finish up our day of relaxation and rest. Tomorrow would bring another day of intense labor and there was a lot of work left to do!
